Finally, Back Up In The Air

It seems like it has been 10 years since I was last up in the air but in honesty I am not even sure how long it has been, but probably at least couple years. This has all changed over the last couple with a couple flights out of Brookneal Va for training. Jeff Jenson(Instructor)of CuttingEdgeAirSports.com and I have been up twice now for training including one for a dual cross country flight. I need about 6 more hours of dual flying to be done but I have to admit it is great to be back up in the air. Dubose is also getting into the training and only has less then 5 hours of training left. Now we need to get the rest of the guys started so we can all get legal and flying together again. My first 2 flights with Jeff have been in his new machine which is a Powrachute Pegasus with the 912 in it. Very nice machine but I have to admit I love my Buckeye DM and will so happy when I am back flying it. I have a good bit of work to do on it before it can be air worthy again but hopefully a busy weekend with it will take care of that. Joe and I had our wings inspected last week by a certified parachute inspector guy. I am sorry for forgetting his name but if you ever need your chute looked at I can get you his info. Here is a picture of Jeff's machine and another plane that was down at the field doing some training also. Now that we seem to be getting back into flying maybe I will able to update the blog a little more frequently.

PPG Pilot

I know it has been quite a while since my last post and I really have no excuses except being really busy and a little lazy. Still have not been back up in the air but hopefully that will change very soon since we are planning to start our training again at the start of the year. The wife and I were out at Valley View Mall one day around spring time when we spotted a PPG in the back of a pickup. I had to stop by and grab a shot of it and while I was the owner came outside. We exchanged stories with his about PPGs and mine of course about PPCs. I must apologize because I can not remember his name but who knows maybe we will cross paths again. He was a trip to talk to and he had all kinds of energy about flying and I want to say he flies out of Salem VA.

PPC Crash

Here is a video of a PPC crash I believe in Utah. This video has caused a pretty good buzz about PPCs or should I say a bad buzz. I understand the guy had all the best intentions flying low and dropping candy for the kids but I am pretty sure this was not the outcome he planned on. This is a great video to show why their are rules about flying this low over congested areas and why we do not do it. I do not know all the details about the pilot or the crash but I believe everyone is OK and their were no serious injuries. I have looked at the video many times now and have yet to see a N-Number on the machine and it sure appears it is a two place machine. I know a lot of people did not want to go through the trouble of getting their planes N-Numbered but I wonder what is going to happen to this pilot now and if he will be fined by the authorities?

I have still yet to get the PPC off the ground this year. We have all talked about flying, but between jobs, weather, and Sport Pilot it has been tough. I believe now that Spring is officially here we might start getting into some nice flying weather. I did stumble across a nice web site for information about PPCs at EasyFlight.com. This site has classes and other information about PPCs that was nice to know. Unfortunately after visiting this site it looks like I might have the answer to a previous post which was where is Buckeye PPC?

Buckeye Powered Parachutes??????? MIA???

What has happened to Buckeye Powered Parachutes? I went to their web site today and it was last updated 8/10/2007. I wonder if they are even still in business or if they have done like a lot of companies and called it quits? I really believe they have a great product, but I wonder if you can even get in touch with them anymore if you need something? It seems as if the PPC buzz is about gone, or maybe we are just in the wrong part of the country to be PPC pilots. I have even noticed that the amount of PPC videos on YouTube has decreased. I hope to get back into flying pretty regular this spring and have actually started getting the itch again. I know once I get back up in the air I will get that great feeling that only PPC pilots can get in the air. I wonder if this Sport Pilot has put a damper on the sport instead of what they thought would increase the ease of putting pilots in the air. My goal is to have all my Sport Pilot done this year so I can put all of this behind me so I can start enjoying flying again.

This was a crazy video I saw on YouTube of a PPC getting ready to take off and the chute flipping over on takeoff. Before I saw this I did not even know this could happen but thankfully people on the ground caught it and were yelling at the pilot to abort take off.

I was outside the other day walking with Noah on the land and we went down to the shed where the PPC has been stored. Noah is obsessed w/ garage doors so we were playing with the doors when I decided to pull out the PPC and see if it would even start up. I can not even remember the last time I flew in it. Unfortunately the battery was dead so I had to do the old fashion hand crank to get it going. It took a while to get it going but once started it ran like new. If the wind would have cooperated I think I would have taken it up and see if I could still fly. Hopefully the weather will break and give us some decent flying days so we can get back up. I am ready to get my sport pilot done so I can put that behind me. As far as I know I believe about everyone has been grounded for quite sometime due to busy schedules, weather not cooperating, or babysitting.

I had just pulled up in my truck to the Funny Farm the other week when I heard that familiar sound of a PPC flying. I finally caught a glimpse of one coming over the trees and reconized it as Jerry Claytor. Jerry and his wife were up enjoying the perfect flying weather and decided to stop by for a quick visit. I have spoke with Jeff Jenson and hopefully will start my Sport Pilot training in the next couple months. I believe their will be around 3-5 people training when I go through and maybe we will be able to help each other get through it. I grabbed the camera and got Jerry and his wife taking off to go back home.

Kiwi has been busy working on putting together videos for the site and unfortunately I am unable to put them on here, something about unable to put movies on here. He did a great job on the videos and I know they will only get better. If you would like to see them you can on YouTube.com and just type in search for powered parachute. We are all still working on getting our sport pilot ratings, but with the limited amount of instructors close we have our hands tied. It looks like right now we would have to travel out west to get everything done, but hopefully we will get some instructors closer soon.

Finally in the air again

Got to fly today for about 15 minutes and it was great to get back up again. It has been quite a while since I was up, and I have to admit it was just like the first time. It was very smooth flight under 400 feet, but anything above seemed to get quite bumpy. Noah was on the ground to supervise, and after I landed he jumped in the pilots seat to take me up. I can't wait till he is old enough to go up to see if he likes it like I do. After getting up in the air I remembered how much I love flying, and decided I needed to get up in the air more frequently.

New Fuel Line

Joe took a couple photos of me when we were putting new fuel line on the PPCs for the inspections. Looks like the only thing left for us now is to meet up w/ the FSDO to get some signatures and than start working on our sport pilots. I was talking to Jeff the other day and he mentioned a fly-in down in TN next month called the Smokey Mountain Fly-in. I am not sure if I am going to be able to go, but I am going to try since it sounds like fun. My N-Number is N716PP and the 716 is Noahs birthday and the PP stands for powered parachute.

N-Number Finally Complete

The machine now has N-number and is ready to fly legally except for me getting my Sport Pilot. I am so glad this is finally over and can put this behind me. It wasn't that bad once I started talking w/ the man that was inspecting it. I will have to post the mans name later since I have already forgot it, but he was the first person to fly a powered parachute. He was super nice and very helpful during the entire process. Joe got his machine N-numbered today and it passed w/ flying colors. I know Chris and John still need theres inspected and I believe both of them are going on Monday. We had it done in Amherst at Ron Dixons place. He had a great hangar that was really nice and big even though it was full of ppcs and trikes. I guess the next step will be heading down to TN to get our sport pilot student so we can fly again and that will hopefully be very soon.

Almost ready for inspection

I have been working with Joe over the last couple days trying to get our two machines ready for inspection this Friday. We pretty much have the red one done except for some minor things that will be taken care of before the inspection. Overall I am very pleased w/ the machine and I think it will pass w/no problems. John Dubose (Kiwi) did a great job on the stickers and Joe came up w/ the N-number plate which I think turned out better than expected. I will be so glad when this whole thing is over and behind us, and we can concentrate on flying again. I noticed this week that three days in a row were perfect for flying, but was unable to because of having it tore apart. I have got to admit that this is a lot of work, but looking back the work was well needed for the most part, and was probably a good thing. I have also started a MySpace page so I will probably be posting less until I get the hang of that.

N-Number Inspection

We have signed up to have our ppcs inspected at the end of this month for our N-Numbers. We have been working on our machines to get them ready, and I believe we are very close to having them done. We are having them inspected in Amherst Va by what I have been told was the first person to ever fly a powered parachute. He flew the first one at the University of Notre Dame. I guess he probably didn't realize what he was starting and it will be a pleasure to meet the man that started it all. I will have to say he must pretty crazy or very brave to be the first one to leave the ground in an open cart supported only by a big parachute.
I hope that we want have any problems w/ the inspection, but since this is the first time any of us have had to do anything like this it should prove to be very interesting. We have not been flying much lately due to weather, busy schedules, and trying to get the machines ready. Hopefully after all of this is done we will be back to flying on a regular basis and can put all of these headaches behind us.

Smith Mountain Lake by PPC

Yesterday we were working on the machines getting them ready for the N-number inspection when the wind seemed to come to a halt. I believe that this inspection is not going to be as bad as first thought, but until it is done I will have to just wait. Kiwi and I flew yesterday over Smith Mountain Lake for about an hour. It was a little hazy in the air, but still a beautiful day to fly. I started doing some studying for the written test and I found out quickly how little I know. Their is a lot more to this Sport Pilot than I imagined, but I guess I don't have a choice and will have to start hitting the books.

Short Flight

I took a short flight the other morning to get a couple pictures of the land we are planning on putting a house on. I was hoping to get some shots to help us figure out where would be the best building spot. Unfortuanetly the camera died after only a couple shots so that plan went out the window. I still was able to get a couple before I returned back down to earth. It wasn't ideal flying weather either even though on the ground was perfectly still. Once I got up around 600' I started getting bumped around more than I like so I called it a day, and headed back to the field.
We are all still working toward getting our Sport Pilot right now, and I think our next step will be to get signed off to take the written test. I have the study materials now, and just need to take the time to start reading.

New Pilot Picture

Here is a picture of John, who flies around the Bedford area in an Outlaw Powered Parachute. This is the UFPPC that I saw one day flying over Bedford. The other picture is a beautiful shot he got while flying over Smith Mountain Lake. I haven't been able to fly w/ John, but hopefully this summer we will be able to get up in the air together. It is always nice to hear from other pilots and especially when they are in the area. I hope we will start to get more pilots close by and maybe the Sport Pilot coming out will open the doors for some people. John is lucky since he flies a single seat machine so he doesn't have to worry about jumping thru all the hoops to get his machine N-Numbered and inspected. Sometimes I wonder if it would just be simpliar to just buy a single place machine, but for now we are looking into going to TN to get our training done this summer. 1st meeting on the N-Number transition

We finally got together yesterday to start working on the N-Number process. I believe we got a lot of the paperwork done, but their is still a lot of work to be done. We checked out each others machines and tried to get a head start on what we need to order to get our air worthiness certificates. It seems like a lot of detail work, but after looking at our machines it seems to me that it might not be as bad as first thought. Unfortunately the wind was up yesterday so nobody was able to fly.

Finally up in the air again

Kiwi and I finally got to fly again late yesterday afternoon. It was a great flight and the wind was perfect for flying. We only stayed up for around 30 minutes due to this being the first time up in a while and I have to say it felt great. I definitely had some rust on my landings, but I know that will come back after we get a couple more flights in. I hope this will be the beginning of some nice weather so we can start getting up a little more often. I didn't get to many pictures since it was getting dark and the camera doesn't work so well in the late afternoon. We are all getting started on our N-Number process and after looking at what we need to do I do not think it will be all that bad. The one shot I got was of Stanton River High School soccer field as we flew by yesterday.

N Number Time

I just received my conversion kit last week for changing the old powered parachute into a brand new N-number flying machine. I have to admit I have not been putting much effort into getting myself or the machine switched over to the new specs. I guess it is time to buckle down and get started on this and hopefully not have a really nice piece of yard art before it is all said and done. This whole idea of getting your machine N numbered and getting your sport pilot is a kind of tricky ordeal. It is like you are shooting yourself in the foot with either you do first, because once you have either or , you are illegal to use the other until you have both. As of right now I wish they would have just left the powered parachutes alone, so we would not have to jump thru all the same hoops that a regular pilot does. I am about to send off for my N-number registration and that does not seem that bad, but I am dreading getting the aircraft passed, and also myself passing the sport pilot test. I will try to keep the blog updated as I go thru this process but be ready for some head-banging, cussing, and probably a lot of complaining.

Here is a video of a guy skydiving from a powered parachute I found on YouTube. I have still not been up flying, but hopefully the weather will turn around and we will get some nice flying weather. I did have a dream the other night that I was taking off in the Buckeye when the parachute snagged on a house and made me flip over. Than a Trike slammed into a fence, but nobody was hurt. I guess it was more of a nightmare than a dream. So I guess even in my dreams I can't get back up in the air.

I have actually no new stories of flying since I it seems like forever since I have been up in the air. Between the weather, work, and family I have not had much time for flying. I guess the main thing that I have to do now is get ready for the new sport pilot that is coming in this year. I guess we all have to have it by the end of the year no questions asked if we want to keep flying powered parachutes. I am not looking forward to getting this sport pilot right now, but maybe once we get going it want be so bad.

Future PPC Pilot

Here is our future pilot in the family. Noah got this flight jacket for xmas and when he puts it on he thinks it is time to fly. I hope when he gets old enough he will have the passion to fly, but I guess we will just wait and see. I have not been up myself in a quite a while, but maybe w/ the holdays over and everything starting to settle down I will be able to get back up.

I haven't posted anything new lately because I haven't been able to fly. I was going through some of my old photos and found some that I do not believe I have posted so I pulled them up. If I have posted these, than I will try to find some new ones for next time. Both of these are of Kiwi(John) flying out at the Funny Farm. Kiwi has been doing the most flying of all of us latetly, but even he has not been flying enough. We are all looking into the Sport Pilot coming up, and I guess w/ the new year approaching quickly we will have to get on the ball and get this thing done. I will try to keep our attempts to get our Sport Pilot posted on here so everyone will know the pains and benefits of this new law.

Another cold flight

We got to go up today for about an hour and it was some really nice flying weather. Kiwi and I went up the first time, but bumpy winds and radio problems brought us down after only about 5 minutes of flying. After the radio problem was fixed we went back up and, by than the wind had almost vanished. We both flew out of Joes Funny Farm and had a very smooth flight. I just buzzed around near the house and made one touch and go at Jerry Claytors house. He came out and while I was on approach and we talked for a bit by radio and than it was time for me to head back before it got to dark to fly. Kiwi got some neat video of him flying over his brother-in-laws house while his brother-in-law filmed him from the ground. I will try to post some of his videos, but for some reason I am still having problems being able to get them to post on the blog. I have to go back to work tomorrow, but I believe everyone else is going to take advantage of the weather and try to get some more flying in.

Cold day for flying

We were able to fly yesterday at Joe's, but it was a little chilly after getting up. I was fine all over except for one place, and that was my little toes. I forgot my boots and only had on thin tennis shoes and let me tell you by the time I landed my feet were froze like a block of ice. Kiwi(John) and Chris also came over to fly and we had a very smooth flight. We all flew around an hour yesterday afternoon even though it was opening day for rifle season. I stayed up pretty high so I wouldnt tempt any angry hunters to shoot me out of the sky. I even set a new personel height record by going just above 4000 feet. Hopefully we will be able to get up in the air a little more often due to the weather finally starting to cooperate w/ us.

Sorry it has been so long since I put a new post up, but haven't had much time lately for flying. These were taken a couple months ago by John(Kiwi) flying out of Rowell International. The one of the chute coming in is me shooting a touch and go at Joes. The other one is of Hales Ford Bridge Kiwi got at Smith Mountain Lake. We are all itching to get back up and maybe the weather will cooperate w/ us and give us some good flying weather. I will try to get a some new pics soon and keep the blog updated as soon as I get some new shots.

Installed new fuel tank

John came over the other day and helped put the other fuel tank that he fixed on the machine. The older tank might have flown its last time due to stress on the spot where the leak is when it is mounted on the machine. John has fixed it twice and even though we thought it was fixed it keeps pulling the weld apart after minor usage. The other tank is also repaired ,but the leak in it was at the top of the tank and in a different spot so I do not believe it will give me any more trouble. We flew the other afternoon and it was a beautiful day to be up and about. The haze of summer was gone and we could see everything. This picture here was taken a while back in the summer. Unfortunately I forgot my camera the other afternoon, but John took a bunch so I will try to get some of those for the site soon.

We were flying around Joe's house when out of sky came another PPC pilot and we were quite shocked to see another pilot in the area. After attempting to contact them on radio w/ no luck the plane landed at Joes. I landed also and found out it was Jerry Claytor also of Bedford and him and his wife were out also enjoying the afternoon. He said he lent out his patch cord so that was the reason he was not able to talk to us while we were flying. They came over and visited for a while and than headed back home.

John, Joe, and I have also all been talking about this new Sport Pilot making its way into PPCing and we all seem to have very mixed feeling about it and the verdict is still out on our approval yet. It seems w/ the list of good things it will bring to powered parachuting their is a much longer one for bad things. We are all still trying to learn more about it so we can make a better decision with all the facts, but until than we will keep flying and enjoying our sport.

PPC takeoff
This was taken a while back on a nice afternoon to fly. Kiwi(John) has really been logging in some flying hours until this nasty weather moved in. It looks like most of the hot flying days are gone, and now it is getting close to flight suit time. We will fly year round just alll depends on the wind for us. We are also getting very close to getting a class set up for us to all go on and get our BFI(basic flight instructor). I hope we will all have this before to long so it will be easier to transition into sport pilot. We have also been looking into Sport Pilot and this seems like it could get pretty aggravating trying to get us and our planes registered. I know the whole idea of Sport Pilot is to make things simple and easy, but I will believe it when I see it. It seems everything is still in the making and nobody really knows for sure how it will all work.

Here is some shots of a house I got a while back I found as I was going through some older pictures of us flying. This house is a lady I know from the gym I goto and she lives just down the road from Joe's house. It is a beautiful house and everytime I seemed to take its picture it was just before dark and the pictures weren't that clear. As you can see from the one picture she lives on the side of mountain and that would be one heck of a backyard to have.

Grounded Again

It was a beatiful afternoon today and I was over Joes and decided to try to get an hour in before it got dark. Their was no breeze and everything seemed perfect for a smooth flight, until I started filling the machine up w/ gas. I was filling it up and all of sudden I looked down at the tank and I noticed a small stream running down the side of the tank. Before I could even turn the pump off to stop filling the machine their was a steady stream of gas running down the side of the tank. Unfortunately where Kiwi had fixed my tank a while back it sprung a new leak. I guess it was just not meant to be w/ this tank. I still have the other tank that Kiwi also fixed and I am crossing my fingers that it want leak and I will be back flying soon and then I will have pictures of us flying.

Corn maze at Layman Farms

I was flying the other afternoon when I flew over this maze and I snapped a couple shots of it real quick. I found out later it is a corn maze at Layman Farm in Montvale off of 460. I was just flying around when it caught my eye and couldn't believe the detail they are able to put in it.
I think I might have to go try it out because it looks like fun, but I will have a copy of this picture to help me from getting lost. I might try to get back over their the next time I go up so I can get some better shots of it, but the weather lately has been pretty windy.

Here are a couple more shots from the other afternoon when Kiwi and I flew over Smith Mountain Lake. The one of the house that you can barely see due to all the trees is mine. It was hard to even get a shot at all of it from it being hidden in the trees. The other house is a friends that both Kiwi and I work with. He wasn't home when we flew over but his mother-in-law was there babysitting, and she came out to wave to us. He was my first captain when I came out of the academy at the fire department, but now he has moved on to another station, and left Kiwi and me to hold the fort down.

Smith Mountain Lake

Flying over Smith Mountain Lake

This was taken the other day when Kiwi and I flew over to Smith Mountain Lake. After installing the original gas tank back on my machine that Kiwi fixed I wanted to take it for a test flight. After double checking everything we were back up in the air. I flew around for a bit just to check everything out, and than we were off to the lake. The Buckeye flew just great, and we had a great flight w/ some really nice scenery. We flew about an hour and after landing I checked the gas tank out to find no cracks or leaks. Looks like Kiwi fixed it for good, and I am back in business.

Gas tank might be fixed

The leak in the gas tank might be fixed this time. Kiwi was able to work on the tank again, and I we believe this time he got it sealed. He thinks the first time he just didn't get the tank hot enough for the plastic to bond together and seal. We put some gas in it and it seems to be holding w/ no gas leaks. So hopefully the tank will be put back on the machine and have me ready for flying again without worrying about the tank.
I have to thank Kiwi for fixing the tank even if if doesn't hold this time. I was giving him a hard time about the first time since it didn't hold. We give each other a hard time and this one was really getting to him since he loves to tinker w/ stuff and he was on a mission to get it right. I have to admit he is very smart when it comes to tinkering, and a guy once told me that "if you want to know something about nothing, just ask Dubose", well that could not be more true. He knows a little about everything and a lot about somethings, so he is a very good resource to know and have as a friend.

UFPPC(unidentified flying powered parachute)

I was on my way to the office w/ Mr. Noah and had to stop to fill Leah's car up w/ gas(whole nother story). I was standing out pumping the gas and I just happened to look up in the air and saw a PPC flying around. I was filling up at the station right near the D-Day Memorial and I figured it was Jerry Claytor since the field he flys out of is very close. I finished up filling the car and thought I would head up to his field to watch him land but this chute just kept on flying right past the field. I started to wonder if he was just doing a low pass, but than I realized that this chute did not look like the one Jerry had last time I saw his machine. I was going to hang around and see if the PPC was going to come back but Mr Noah decided he did not want to stay and he let me know that it was time to eat. The rest of the way to the office I kept looking for the UFPPC, but I never saw it again.

Grounded Again

A couple days ago Joe put the old tank that Kiwi fixed back on the machine and while filling it for the first time it started leaking again. Kiwi tried to fix it from where I cracked it the first time from a hard landing but, unfortunately it didn't take. He still believes that he can fix it so maybe this gas tank problem will finally be fixed once and for all. I wish I could find another tank just like the original, but according to Buckeye the mold for it is gone. The same day we found out about the tank Kiwi was still able to get a little flying in and he is really racking up some flying hours. He is landing and flying like a pro now and I don't know if we can stop him or if we have just unleashed a flying monster.haha Aunt Tammy(Kiwi's wife) comes over and she helps watch Noah while we are up flying.

Yesterday Kiwi and I flew over to another field to practice some touch and gos. This air strip is really nice and belongs to a man who flys a Piper Cub out of it. Jerry Claytor also lives on this strip and he flys his Buckeye PPC out of it as well. I guess this is what you would call an ultralight heaven w/ your front yard being your airport. You could pull right out of the garage and taxi to your runway as you wave to the neighbors. Jerry came out to watch us as we did some touch and gos and he got on the radio and said his brother and him would fly w/ us tomorrow as long as the weather cooperates. Here is a short video I got of Kiwi doing a touch and go yesterday afternoon at the Funny Farm. He was practicing his landings w/ and w/ out power so when he flys for Jeff again he will be ready. He did a couple dead stick landings which means he cuts the engine completly off and comes in w/ out power. Both dead stick landings were really good and he made it look easy like he has been doing them for many years. We are all getting close to being ready to test for our BFI or go on and get our sport pilot rating for powered parachutes. I hope that we will all have our training completed by Xmas, but a lot of that will have to do w/ the weather and our instructor working together at the same time. Tomorrow looks like it might be some good flying weather so we might get some more hours logged and new pictures for the blog.

These were taken by Kiwi on two different days that we flew. This is a great picture of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford and the other one is a beautiful sunset over the Roanoke Valley. The Memorial is only about 10 minutes away by air and it is right beside another ultralight field that local friends fly out of. The D-Day memorial is a really nice place to visit and I recommend it to anyone that has not been there yet. It is a very moving experience to see the Memorial and when my Granddad came up from Mississippi we took him to see it. He was one of the Heroes that hit the beaches in the war and it was really interesting to see him talking to other vets who were there, and telling us about some of his personal experiences.

Beans Landing

This was taken by Kiwi of myself coming in at Joe's Funny Farm for a final landing. Our rescue crew of three dogs w/ 11 legs was first on scene to make sure everything was safe. They are always excited to see us come in and they are usually the first ones to congratulate us on a safe flight. The weather is still not good for flying, but their was a glimmer of hope today for a couple hours when the sun came out and showed itself, but as I am writing this it is sprinkling again outside. It is hard for me to complain about the rain since my yard was pretty much dead before we got all of this rain.

This is a short video of our instructor Jeff flying his PPC last fall at the Brookneal field. We were all down there for Kiwi's wife to go up w/ Jeff to make sure it was OK for Kiwi to buy one. Jeff took her up for a orientation flight and she loved it. Jeff went up in the PPC flying solo and pulled a couple stunts while flying to show us what they are capable of doing in a Buckeye Dream Machine. She can not wait till Kiwi gets all of his training done and the new Sport Pilot rules come into effect so she can go up and enjoy the views from above. The weather is still terrible for flying right now w/ all this rain, but hopefully it will break soon and let us all get back up in the air.

Beans taking off

I know it has been a while since I last posted, but unfortunately the weather around here has been terrible for flying. We are getting the weather from tropical storm Ernesto right now and we are enjoying wind and rain from it. I did notice that the Red Baron who is flying coast to coast using a PPC is stuck right now also due to the weather I believe somewhere in GA. He is so close to making yet the weather just want cooperate to get it done. I hope he will be able to make soon and safely.
I hope to get myself back up in the air sometime soon, but I like to fly when their is almost no wind, and we all know that is almost unheard of around here. Maybe the weather will break coming up and we will finally get some decent flying weather.
This video was taken the last day I flew by Leah of me taking off from Rowell International. Leah would have taken more video and pictures but the camera battery died. This was the day Kiwi and I flew and the wind picked up that later in the flight. Iwish the camera battery would not have died because it could have taken some really good pictures of mine and Kiwi's happy faces as we landed safely.

Windy Flight

These were taken yesterday when Kiwi and I went up flying. It was not the best day up there for taking pictures since it was so hazy. When we took off their was very little wind blowing, but while we were up it started to pick up a bit. Kiwi was funny when he said he finally gets his letter to fly from our instructor Jeff and his first flight is the worst weather he has flown in. I was also caught in some wind that actually might have been the worse I have ever been in since I have been flying. I had just made a touch and go and was going back around w/ everything going smooth when I just started bouncing and swinging. I was close to a mountain so I am guessing the wind was swirling around it and really disrupting my air. After being beat around a couple minutes I headed back to the field for a final so I didn't have to fight the wind anymore.
Kiwi stayed up and said he was starting to have fun in the wind. I am the opposite and would just rather stay on the ground if it is not smooth flying. Kiwi came back to the field and set it down like pro with a perfect landing making it look easy, but I know he was a little nervous after his fun windy flight.

Powered Parachute

Kiwi and I finally figured out how to get some of our videos on the blog so now we can show everyone what it is like when we fly. We actually don't have that many videos of us flying, but now that we know how to get them up we will start filming a lot more. I am still learning everyday about new stuff I can do w/ the blog and hopefully it will only get easier. I believe this video was taken sometime in the fall of last year at Rowell International of me doing a touch and go w/ Kiwi filming.

Kiwi finally gave me a disk w/ all of his pictures he took while at the Kentucky Fly-in. He was able to get some really nice shots and I picked out a couple that I liked of around 100. I can't believe it has been so long since we were up in Ky.
I was able to fly for about 30 minutes yesterday and try out my new EGT probe we installed. I have had problems w/ my EGT lately bouncing from 900 to 1700 every couple seconds. We changed all the connections and one of the EGT probes but w/ no luck. I guess we will try changing the other EGT probe and if that doesn't work Joe thinks we should look into gettting a new EIS. I have a Taskem now and if we go that route I think I will try to get a Grand Rapids since Joe has one and it has more options on it.
If anyone has any suggestions on my problems w/ my EGT I would greatly appreciate any information that could fix my problems.

No new flying stories

Unfortunately no new flying pics but I found a couple that I don't believe have been on the blog yet. Hopefully we will have some weather that will cooperate soon. Kiwi has ordered the tools and supplies that he believes will be able to fix my gas tank problems. It would be nice to have a gas tank that wouldn't leak so I don't have to worry about that anymore.
I went to the Hospital today for my stress test and according to the Dr everything looks as normal as it can for me, and I should be fine.

Finally flying again

Well, I finally was able to get back up in the air and see what flying was like again. The gas tank problem is just that, still a problem. Joe had to grind the tank down a little so we could get it to fit, but in doing so we put another hole in it.
Fortunetly the hole is at the top of the tank and we were able to temporarily fix it so I could fly w/ Kiwi and Joe the other afternoon.
Kiwi finally got his letter from our instructor Jeff and he is a happy pilot now. He said he had some of his worse landings yet but I think in whole he did a good job while Jeff was watching him.
I thought Jeff was going to get to fly w/ us but we ran out of daylight so he had to do all his flying from the ground.
I took a little time off from posting due to the other night at work I ended up at the ER with heart palpitations. After about 5 hours there they let me go w/ a monitor that I had to wear for 24 hours. I have a stress test scheduled next week, and than a follow up w/ the Dr. to find out what is going on w/ my ticker. I don't believe it is going to amount to anything and I should be back to normal in no time.

These were taken yesterday of Kiwi flying. He bought his machine last year and already has almost enough hours to test out for his BFI. I believe that he has the best looking PPC that I have ever seen. He was telling me yesterday about the bars that come down in the front and how they do obstruct some of his view as he flys but that you get kind of use to it. I hope to fly his soon and than fly mine right after it so I can compare them.

Almost Ready to Fly

Joe and I put the new gas tank in yesterday afternoon. I snapped this picture after we were done and placed the old tank beside it to show the difference in tanks. There is a big void now where the old tank followed up the back of the seat. The tanks both hold 10 gallons but they are shaped quite a bit different.
We ran into a couple small problems, but Joe was able to think outside the box and fix them. This is where I run into problems, if it doesn't work the way it is suppose to than I have a chance of breaking something from frustration.
I plan on going back over to the farm today and taxiing it just to make sure everything is working right and if the weather and machine cooperate maybe even get to fly.
I had a crazy dream last night that Joe and Kiwi were taking off beside me and than my machine took off w/out me on it. It just kept going up while I chased it w/ my line socks and parachute bag. It finally landed right beside a lake in someones back yard. I have to admit it landed pretty smooth considering their was no pilot. I guess I dreamed this cause it has been so long since I have flown.haha

Kiwi came over to the Funny Farm yesterday to get some flying in and we decided that it was time for Noah's first flight. Unfortunately Noah did not meet the height/weight requirements and he was not able to go up. I guess he will have to wait a couple more years before he can get his first flight in.
Even though Noah didn't get to fly Kiwi went up for about 45 minutes. I was still grounded due to the gas tank problem and I had hoped to have it done yesterday, but Noah kept us pretty busy so not much work was done on the tank. Joe believes he can make the tank work and hopefully I will get back over there today and be able to help him.
I got some pretty good pictures yesterday of Kiwi flying, but I liked this one because it looks like the chute has grabbed and pulled his head back as well. haha

Update on gas tank

I just got off the phone w/ Joe and he told me the gas tank is here and we should be able to install it this afternoon. This tank is not identical to the one that was broken but according to Buckeye it should fit. I believe that if anyone can get it to work Joe will be the one.
Joe is one of those guys that seems to know a little about everything and able to figure out how anything works. I am the complete opposite of that and even when I read the instructions of putting something together I have problems. When Joe was in the service he worked on jets so for him to work on PPCs is nothing.
I hope to have some new photos of us flying at the Funny Farm tonight and I will post them as soon as I get them.

Gas Problem

I went over to the Funny Farm yesterday afternoon to get some flying in but ran into a little problem. My gas tank sprang a leak a while back and between Buckeye and my instructor Jeff I have not been able to get my hands on a new one. That is a long story in itself but Joe talked to Jeff yesterday and we might get one in by Thursday.
I had to make some adjustments to the prop yesterday and after doing so I was taxing around to warm up the engine. After getting the engine ready I pulled up to where we normally take off from and after getting out to lay my chute out for takeoff I smelt gas. After further investigation Joe and I found that the leak was back and I was loosing fuel so instead of flying we spent the nice afternoon draining the tank.
Jeff told us that when Buckeye went bankrupt a while back that they sold the mold of the gastank to someone else and since than that person has also went under. This leaves me in a spot since Buckeye said they only have new tanks but that it should work. Thankfully Joe and Dubose are around because when it comes to engineering something in that isn't made to fit I believe those two can do it.
Needless to say I am very dissapointed in Buckeye but mabye they are right and we will have no problems getting the new one to fit. Might have to use some bubble gum and shoestrings but I will fly again.

I know I have really been slacking on the site since the baby being born, but hopefully with everything getting settled in I might be back up in the air soon. I know that I am still watching the wind every morning and afternoon checking for flying weather. Sometimes I see the tree tops sitting still and think about slipping over to the field but I know their will plenty of time for flying soon enough especially once we figure out how to put a baby seat on it. haha

Ready to fly again

I know that the site has kind of taken a back seat to Noah and I should get back to posting on us flying in the next couple weeks. Kiwi called and bragged about going flying the other day down at the lake w/ Chris. He told me they got to fly around an hour and half but it was a hot and humid day. Old Kiwi is a regular pilot now and should be signed off whenever Jeff gets around to training again. We should all be testing for our BFI soon so we can take passengers up and they can enjoy what we are always telling them about.

I am still working on a baby seat to take Noah up when we get home but I guess he might have to wait a little while to get the flying bug. Leah told me I needed to go flying some since I have all this time off and it would be a shame not to get to fly any. I can't wait to get back up in the air and see if I can still remember how to get that powered parachute up and down safely.

We are all finally getting released from the Hospital. Everything looks good and Noah and Mom are doing great. We will probably leave around lunch time today. We are looking forward to sleeping in our own bed again. All those tiny clothes that we have for Noah are still to big but we are hoping he will grow right into them w/ no problems. Everyone at the hospital here in Roanoke were great to us and could not of asked for a better group of nurses and doctors. I will keep the site full of new photos as we take them.

Here are a couple new shots from today. Everything is going great so far and Noah is doing awesome. He is sleeping most of the day until it is time to eat and he lets everyone know when that time is. According to the Dr. we will probably being leaving tomorrow afternoon w/ the baby. We all three want to thank everyone again for all the visits, phone calls,emails and support. We have been so lucky to have all of you guys to help us through this new journey and we both know that we have only just begun. I will keep posting any new info. and photos as I get them.

Noah Alexander Franks Born July 16th,2006

Well, we have a new addition to the Franks family and his name is Noah Alexander Franks born on July 16th, 2006 at 15:47. He weighed 5lbs and 12 ounces, 17 3/4 inches long. Noah came 4 weeks early, but since Leah's blood pressure became elevated due to pre-eclampsia the doctors decided to induce her. The baby was 36 weeks so they were not to concerned about any problems due to early delivery. Leah was amazing during the entire process never complaining about anything and having no problems. We are all resting at the hospital together and will probably be released on Tuesday to go home as long as their are no problems. Thanks to all the family and friends that came by and called w/ support and we look forward to sharing more pictures as we get them.

Where I spend my days not flying!

I finally got a shot of the firehouse where Kiwi and I work. We spend our days looking at the weather for upcoming flying days and searching all the other powered parachute sites. We have an engine, medic truck, one reserve engine, and than we have on the back side the ARFF trucks. Kiwi has been w/ the city for 23 years and he now on the ARFF crew as a Lt. so he can drool over planes coming and going from the airport.
I have been w/ the city for 2 years now and ride on the engine and the medic truck. We have a good time while working at the station messing around w/ each other to help the time go by. Kiwi is one of the best pranksters in the city so we hardly have a dull day or night around here. I will try to get a shot of all the nuts I work w/ one day if I can get them all awake at the same time.

Family Reunion Powered Parachute Flying

Here are a couple shots from the family reunion at Joe's this year. I wasn't at the house this day to fly, but the wife got some good shots of Joe and Frank flying. Frank is a BFI so he was able to take some family up and show them what its like to fly in a powered parachute. The 4-wheeler you see is loaded down w/ the wife's cousins that were out watching the flying or maybe they were to interested in seeing how many clowns they could get on one 4-wheeler. I was able to come over the next day and get about an hour of good flying in. I hope to have my BFI by next year so I can take people up and show them what it is like to see everything from the air. I know my parents are both very eager to go up.
Joe and Diane have their family reunion at their house every year and I don't know how they do it. They have anywhere from 40 to 60 people stay at their house and they stay anywhere from a couple days to a week. I couldn't imagine having that many people stay w/ us that long, I think I would go insane. It is neat to see all the family get together every year and basically have a week long party at the funny farm. I know that all the kids love it and most of them do not want to leave when its over.

Flying Powered Parachutes at the Family-Reunion

Here are a couple shots from the Family Reunion this year at the Joe's place. This is a picture of Frank(Half-Rack) posing w/ his Buckeye right before heading home. The other is a shot of a couple signs we have that warn drivers of potential low flying powered parachutes coming in and taking off from the field. I really like these signs as long as I don't catch one w/ the machine on the way up or down...haha.
Frank got his nickname this weekend at the reunion because of his great idea of trying to para-sail behind a 4-wheeler. Frank had a parachute, a harness, 100' of rope, and a 4-wheeler w/ driver to pull him across the field w/ dreams of flying like a bird. Frank's plan was working like a charm until some minor design flaws and Frank fell out of the sky more like a rock than a feather from about 30 to 50', depending on who you ask? This is where the nickname comes in Half-Rack, due to his 6 broken ribs he suffered from the fall and thankfully nothing else was broken except his pride.
I have more photos of the reunion but they are on a different camera, and as usual for around here I have misplaced the cord to download them to the computer. Soon as I find it I will post some more shots of us flying at the reunion.

Terrible weather for Powered Parachutes

We are having terrible weather lately for any kind of flying. We have needed the rain for quite a while now so I can't complain to bad. At least my yard might actually look green again for a while. These are shots of some more Brookneal training and the one on the left is our instructor Jeff Jenson watching Kiwi perform his pre-flight.

The machine I fly is tore apart right now or at least the gear box is. We were changing the oil in all our machines not to long ago and found a washer in the bottom, which could not be good. I am pretty much just a pilot and trying to learn more about the mechanical part of the machine. Joe does all the work to the machines and w/out him I would never leave the ground. I believe he enjoys working on the machine as much as flying them. Joe tore the gear box down and found a thrust washer missing but no damage to the gears which was a relief. So with the machine out of commission for flying right now and until all the parts come in to replace it this bad weather is not as hard on me.

Here are a couple more shots I got while in Ky and I thought they were pretty good. You can see Joe and Frank taking it easy as we were watching the flight competition. I believe if we go next year Frank and I are going to enter and see how well we do against the other pilots. While I was at the Fly-in I ran into a guy that sold and installed brakes for your PPC. He does a great job and is very competitive with his prices, actually cheaper than I have seen any where including magazines and on the web. If you are looking for a brake I highly recommend checking out his web site, Believeaviation.com and his name is Craig Steffen. I had him install a brake on my machine and Chris had one put on his as well. I am very satisfied w/ my new brake, but the best thing is having that extra comfort knowing I can stop anywhere I land now.

Brookneal Training

Here are a couple shots I got the yesterday at Brookneal where we do our training w/ our instructor Jeff Jenson. Yesterday John(kiwi) went up hoping to get his letter to fly but was denied by Jeff yet the other pilot was signed off w/ his letter. He did a great job while he was there, but when you are flying for Jeff it's easy to be a little nervous to perform for him and trust me I know this first hand. I believe if I was the instructor I would have signed both off w/ helpful pointers on what they need to be working on by the time they come back for their check ride or next letter signing, but than again I am not their instructor. I stayed on the ground and took photos and video of Kiwi flying and learned quite a bit from Jeff just listening to him train. I watched both pilots do their T & Gs and dead stick landings and saw very little difference in their flying. Jeff told me he was looking for a more consistant flying, but that seems like something you get w/ experience and that is hard to do w/ out having a letter so you can fly legal. The flip side of that is Jeff having to stick his neck out and put you under his wing saying you are ready to fly on your own therefore signing you off. I would like to get some peoples opinions on training and what they think is the best way and also the safest way for someone to fly these machines.

Kentucky Fly-in 06

Here are some pictures from our trip to the Kentucky Fly-in this past weekend. We had a great time even though the weather did not want to cooperate. Instead of a lot of flying in the sky, their was a lot of time for everyone's stories that involved the sky from the ground. We met a lot of people on our trip and learned a lot of new things. Chris and I flew for about 45 minutes on Saturday Morning and it was quite an experience being in the air w/ approx. 25 other machines. Only problem I had was not being prepared for the trip since the temperature dropped while we were there. I only packed t-shirts and shorts so I had to make a stop by the local Wal-Mart to get some jeans. The Ragwing Flyers were the ones that put the Fly-in on and they did a nice job so we are all hoping to make it again next year and maybe than we will compete in the competitions they had. I have a ton of photos and I plan to go through them and pick out some more for a later post.

Heading to Ky for Buckeye Fly-in

We are heading up to Ky this weekend for the Buckeye Powered Parachute Fly-in. Their will be five of us and none of us really have any idea of what to expect. Only thing we are sure of is we will have fun whether we fly or not. We hope to learn some neat stuff and meet a lot of new friends. I didn't have any new photos of us flying due to windy conditions latley so I decided to put a shot of the boss of the house. This is our house horse, Ginger. She is always at the field w/ us when were flying and tries to slip into the back seat to go up for a flight. Also have some great news to share about the wife and I.We are expecting our first baby in August and we found out it is going to be a boy, so everyone knows what that means, another Buckeye pilot in training...ha

Smith Mountain Lake

These are some shots I got yesterday as Kiwi and I went flying. The photo of the water is Smith Mountain Lake near Hales Ford Bridge. I found out yesterday that it only takes around 15 minutes by air to get to the lake. It was some of the best scenery I have flown over yet. We have not had the best weather lately for flying so when we can get up we take advantage of it. Hopefully we will get into summer and have some great flying weather. I know I watch the weather now like I have never before looking for calm days.

Joe is the man that got all of us started in PPCs and the one we all go to when we have any problems or need to make any changes. Joe stays pretty busy working at the farm but sometimes we get him out to fly w/ us and its always a treat.
